David Ayer’s Suicide Squad Was Originally Connected to Zack Snyder’s Justice League

A new DCU looms on the horizon, but there are still many details we don’t know about the franchise’s past canon, according to David Ayer. The director of the 2016 version of Suicide Squad is still revealing information about his cut of the film, one that fans continue to ask to see as it would be very different from what finally made it to theaters.

The film, like James Gunn’s 2021 movie, focused on a group of villains or anti-heroes brought together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to fulfill a dangerous mission, which threatened to end their lives. This was the introduction of who became one of the most iconic characters in the saga, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. As well as Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, both who would return alongside Davis for Gunn’s film.

The 2016 production, as well as the 2017 version of Justice League, underwent modifications when it was released on the screen. In the case of the movie that brought together the most famous superhero team, the director’s vision came to light in 2021 thanks to HBO Max. There is still no news about Ayer’s cut, but there are several details revealed by the director, such as its connection to Snyder’s film.

Through Twitter, David revealed that the original script for his movie was directly connected to Justice League:

The script issue was having Steppenwolfe and the Parademons stripped out prior to production. Enchantress was under the control of a mother box and opening a Portal to Apokalypse. This was all cut early in prep. That was a hard loss.

The New Justice League

Now, thanks to the creation of DC Studios under the command of James Gunn and Peter Safran, Warner Bros. Discovery seeks that, finally, the entire DC universe achieves unity and continuity. The division will be in charge of all projects related to the brand, whether they are movies, series, video games or animated productions.

As for the Justice League, Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Green Lantern will be the first members of the group to be introduced, though it will likely take a few years for them to come together as a crime-fighting team. Especially since other major cast members like Wonder Woman aren’t part of the new DCU schedule yet.

So, the first films and tv series that will arrive are probably origin stories that will present these new versions of the beloved characters to the audience, before they can actually team up in a crossover film.
