David de Gea has paid tribute to both Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard after Manchester United confirmed their departures on Wednesday.

The two players will leave Old Trafford when their deals expire at the end of this month. Lingard and Pogba, both 29, came through the academy at United and were part of the side that won the FA Youth Cup in 2011, beating Sheffield United 6-3 on aggregate.

Although they enjoyed success at youth level, both stars have failed to bring United silverware in recent years. The Red Devils haven’t won a trophy since they lifted the Europa League in May 2017, and they finished just sixth in the Premier League this season.

Nevertheless, De Gea respects both players for their many years of service. England international Lingard has spent 22 years of his footballing story at Old Trafford, while World Cup winner Pogba has dedicated nine years of his career to the club across two spells.

“Two special guys and characters, they gave so much to this football club,” tweeted De Gea. “We have so many teammates in this sport, we achieved a lot together and created amazing memories. I hope you both get everything you wish for in the future.”

De Gea’s post followed Pogba’s emotional message to the fans. “I feel privileged to have played for this club,” he tweeted. “Many beautiful moments and memories but most importantly an unconditional support from the fans. Thank you Manchester United.”

Replying to Pogba’s post, Bruno Fernandes wrote: “It was a pleasure to play alongside you for this period. [Wishing you] nothing but the best for your future.”

Eric Bailly also paid tribute to Pogba. The two players signed for the club in the summer of 2016, when Bailly arrived from Villarreal and Pogba returned from Juventus. “I’m gonna miss you bro,” wrote the Ivory Coast international in an emotional Instagram post.

Lingard, meanwhile, tweeted: “Born and bred a Red. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been emotional about leaving a club that is family. After 22 years I’ve had so many special memories and moments that I will cherish forever. Manchester United will always remain in my heart. A massive thank you. Lots of love, Jlingz [Lingard].”

Fernandes also thanked Lingard for his efforts. “I enjoyed having you as a team-mate,” tweeted the Portuguese playmaker. “Keep the good energy, never change that. Go and enjoy yourself always.”

United paid tribute to both players on Wednesday. Confirming Pogba’s departure, a statement read: “Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Paul on his successful career, and thank him for his contributions to Manchester United. We wish him all the best for the next steps on a remarkable journey.”

The club’s statement for Lingard read: “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse for all of the memories he’s helped create during his two decades here and wish him the best of luck in his future career.”
