Dawid Malan bounced back from the misery of missing England’s T20 World Cup final triumph by hitting a century in Adelaide, albeit in a losing cause against Australia.
The left-hander admitted shedding a few tears on being told England would not risk him or bowler Mark Wood for Sunday’s win over Pakistan, despite recovering from injuries.
‘Not being able to play the final was one of the toughest days I’ve had as a cricketer,’ Malan said. ‘That’s what sport’s like – it’s cruel sometimes.
‘Understandably the decision was taken not to risk Woody and me, even though we’d done what was needed.
‘I had a few tears that night, you never know how many World Cup finals you’re going to be a part of.’
He recovered to hit 134 off 128 balls in yesterday’s six-wicket ODI defeat, with the hosts overhauling England’s 287 for nine with 3.1 overs to spare, thanks to fifties from David Warner, Travis Head and Steve Smith.
‘To be fit and perform like I did, it’s extremely satisfying,’ Malan said.
