Kevin De Bruyne admits he is no longer even the favourite Manchester City player in his own house – with his sons now hero-worshipping Erling Haaland. City’s midfielder says son Mason, seven, has the shirt and the long locks to copy the Norwegian goal machine.
His eldest even played football with the striker rather than dad during the Premier League title celebrations on the pitch at the Etihad. “It is not a problem,” said De Bruyne. “All three children have long hair. Erling is a superstar. I see that with the kids at my son’s school, too. They all have hair like that. It’s funny.”
De Bruyne has three children, sons Mason, seven, Rome, four, and a daughter Suri who is two. And the two lads will travel with wife Michelle to Turkey to watch Haaland and their dad tackle Inter Milan in the Champions League final. “My children have all become interested in football this year. They attend more games. They are also starting to play football themselves,” said De Bruyne.
“My eldest in particular is starting to realise a little more what is going on. He wants to come to games more. He came to see Bayern. He begins to experience and enjoy it more. As long as they like it it’s okay.”
De Bruyne himself will be similarly relaxed about his own loss of status around the breakfast table if Haaland helps him secure a Champions League winner’s medal to gild an already superb career. At 31, De Bruyne could yet have more chances to hit the target.
But after the heartache of missing out against Chelsea in 2021 – a match which the Belgian finished in hospital with a fracture eye socket, broken nose and concussion after a clash with Antonio Rudiger – now seems the perfect time. “I’m happy with the way that I am but obviously I know it will help whatever people say about me and the team. It doesn’t put me in bad or good places,” he said.
“Even if we win it on Saturday some people will say why didn’t we win against Southampton in the League Cup and then get the quadruple. That’s the way it goes. We try to win every game possible. Sometimes you are not good enough and another team is better than you and you have to accept it.
“We try to win every game possible, every trophy and in the end we have a pretty impressive career at City, but yes it is something we have not won yet and it is something that we want to win. The outside expectation is never higher than what we set ourselves as a goal. We always want the best. Hopefully that will be Saturday.”
