There’s no doubt that Dead Cells is one of the best indie games of all time. Several factors contribute to its popularity and success. It’s got great graphics, the gameplay is really satisfying, it is very replayable, and it’s a well-polished product.
The weapons are one of the biggest things that make the game so fun to play, and there’s a wide range of them in the game. From guns and swords to saws and lances, you can find anything you desire. Some of these weapons are just filler, there to pad your arsenal and look good, but many more are genuinely good. They provide each run with a unique feel and drastically change how the player experiences the game.
10 Electric Whip
The Electric Whip is an excellent and simple weapon. It is a ranged weapon that ignores obstacles, inflicts the shock effect, auto-targets enemies in your range, and upgrades with Dexterity.
If the targeted enemies are in a pool of water or acid, it electrifies the body and applies a decent amount of damage over time. Any extra modifier, like burn, that the weapon has inflicts on top of the Shock effect that it causes.
9 Oiled Sword
A very basic, balanced, and solid weapon, the Oiled Sword is great in any scenario. It can land critical hits more consistently than any other weapon in the game. Though the enemy does need to be burning, that is easily achieved with its effect that inflicts inflammable oil on the enemy for 20 seconds.
Combining this sword with other weapons that either directly deal fire damage, like flame brand, or those that have a fire effect added on, lets it deal really solid damage. It’s perfect for dealing with high-health enemies that refuse to die.
8 Hokuto’s Bow
A highly effective weapon in the early game, Hakuto’s Bow is a menace when it lives up to its full potential. When using the bow, the player attaches a mark to an enemy, which causes them to take additional damage with each hit for fifteen seconds. Though the damage it deals is relatively low, it acts as a great support weapon when used alongside weapons that deal damage over time.
Unless you’ve already invested heavily into Tactics, picking up Hakuto’s Bow in the mid or late game doesn’t make sense due to the low, flat damage it deals. However, it shines brightly in the early game when enemies aren’t as beefy.
7 War Javelin
Probably the most fun weapon in the game, the War Javelin has some fascinating mechanics that make it unique in Dead Cell’s lineup. It’s a ranged weapon that is meant to skewer enemies to walls. If you hit them near a wall, it does extra damage.
Not only that, but the player can reactivate the weapon to teleport directly to wherever it is. This results in highly dynamic gameplay and some of the most fun you’ll have in a run. Weapons like the War Javelin bring Dead Cells to life, making it one of the best roguelikes on the market.
6 Hattori’s Katana
Hattori’s Katana is a homage to the game Katana Zero. It is a fast-paced weapon with an interesting mechanic, letting you act out your ninja fantasies. Holding the attack button lets the player dash through enemies and deal critical damage. The damage dealt is based on how long you charge the attack for.
An interesting detail to keep in mind is that shield-bearing enemies will be treated as they were when the charge for the attack starts. If they were facing away from the player, the attack will connect, but if they were facing the player, the damage would be blocked even if they turned to face away during the charge.
5 Snake Fangs
Snake Fangs are fantastic dual-wield weapons that do precisely what you think they would and a little more. Whenever the player attacks using these weapons, they are teleported to the nearest enemy and deal critical hits if the enemy has six or more instances of poison.
Since these fangs also deal poison damage, they are particularly effective against enemies with a large health pool since the poison never goes away. Notably, the poison effect doesn’t have to be inflicted by the Snake Fangs, meaning that they synergize well with any weapon or utility item that stacks poison.
4 Frost Blast
A classic ranged weapon, the Frost Blast is a spell that freezes the enemy. Although the damage dealt by this item isn’t that impressive, the effect is well worth the trade-off for the reduced damage. As any new player can attest, one of the hardest parts of Dead Cells is avoiding the attacks and learning all the different enemy fighting styles.
However, with some liberal application of the Frost Blast and a solid primary weapon, these difficulties can be overcome without as much effort. Since the freeze effect stacks, you can keep an enemy indefinitely frozen. Combine that with the fact that it ignores shields and obstacles, and you have a recipe for a beginner-friendly ranged weapon that everybody loves.
3 Meat Skewer
Another entertaining weapon to play with, the Meat Skewer excels at dealing with multiple enemies stacked close to each other but also works well with single-target enemies with a lot of HP. After the first strike with the weapon, the player dashes through them, emerging behind. The following two hits deal critical damage.
These unique mechanics make the Meat Skewer great for dealing with the classic mobs of the game, though it works well against bosses as well because of the crit ability that the weapon possesses.
2 Symmetrical Lance
After defeating the Hand of the King for the first time, the player gets the Symmetrical Lance. This legendary weapon is somewhat limited in its vertical range, only dealing damage in a thin, straight line. However, the horizontal range is excellent. Since it also deals damage behind the player, it allows for excellent crowd control. Combine that with the unique ability that gives it a damage boost if two enemies are killed quickly; this weapon is a mob clearing machine.
Another great aspect of the lance is its ability to break shields and deal 300% more damage to all enemies, including bosses. All these factors combine to make the Symmetrical Lance a phenomenal weapon for the player.
1 Rapier
The most used move in the entire game is the roll. Whether dealing with a boss, an elite, or even just a basic mob, using your rolls effectively is the key to success. Not getting hit is a significant part of the gameplay of Dead Cells, and mastering it is the key to success. Therefore, when a weapon comes out that synergizes with the most used ability in the game, it will be superb.
The Rapier is good for three reasons. It deals critical strikes after rolls, attacks in rapid succession and synergizes well with shields since it deals crits even after parries. No matter what kind of build you’re running, the rapier is a great weapon.
