Dead Space (2008) Gets a First-Person Perspective Mod; Available Now

Dead Space’s remake from a couple of months ago was pretty good, despite some bugs and other issues (that got patched). The game follows Isaac Clarke as he explores the USS Ishimura, realizing that most of the crew are now Necromorphs, which he has to cut down. Though, the PC community has some ideas for the older version of Dead Space.

Over in the 2008 version of the game, PC modders have designed a mod meant to change the experience from third-person action/shooter to a first-person experience. Alongside this mod, a video from Reverse Engineering Gamer showcases the new mod in motion on a fifteen-year-old game.

It should be made abundantly clear that this is for the 2008 version of Dead Space, not the 2023 remake. Inside the video description, Reverse Engineering comments that the mod was designed as a “home-made project made for fun because of boredom,” and the mod is available for players to download here.

In motion, the mod is pretty good, and several in-engine cutscenes wind up looking different but not game-breakingly so. It should also be noted that the readme file has very specific instructions to properly run it, such as requiring Cheat Engine. The mod isn’t absolutely flawless, either, as the changed camera perspective completely hides Isaac’s stats, weapon ammo, health, and other miscellaneous details. So, you can end up suddenly being sliced into bits if you haven’t kept track of how many hits you’ve been taking.

While inside Cheat Engine, you can also change the general camera position from within the FirstPerson script, as well as alter the field of view (FOV) and inventory transition rate. Dead Space, though, needs to be running before the mod can be fully activated. Comparatively, for some other EA titles (such as Star Wars Battlefront II), the game would not have to be running AND be managed by a unique mod manager.

However, after the game (and Cheat Engine) are properly loaded, all it takes is hitting Page Up on your keyboard, and the mod is now able to be toggled with various FOVs in the game. From there, exploring the USS Ishimura in first-person is under your control. Just try not to die that much. We’ll continue to update as more information on Dead Space, remake or original, is released.

Dead Space (2008) is available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC via Steam and the EA app. The 2023 remake is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the EA app.
