Rescue teams searching the Armancette glacier of Mont Blanc have so far recovered 6 bodies following a catastrophic avalanche over the weekend.
Located in the French Alps of southeastern France, the massive slide of snow, rocks, and ice took several groups of cross-country skiers by surprise. The avalanche was filmed by a camera from another nearby ski slope.
Three groups of skiers were caught in the avalanche on Easter Sunday. Two of their guides were killed, but officials have not released the identities of the other 4 people who died.
Authorities also said that one skier suffered minor injuries, and 8 others had been evacuated without injuries, according to Le Monde.
Weather agencies had not issued any avalanche warnings in advance, which left observers nervous about other possible undetected risks.
“It’s a particularly alarming tragedy in such good conditions,” said Dorian Labaeye, president of France’s mountain guide union, told Le Monde.
President Emmanuel Macron offered his condolences to those killed as well as their families on Twitter.
