Delhi Capitals injury update, team news, key players

Delhi Capitals saw Alice Capsey miss out on the last game with a niggle but there is no further update on her return to the playing 11 for the time being.

The side possesses one of the best, if not the best, opening combinations in the tournament in Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma. Lanning currently leads the chart with 206 runs, including two half-centuries while Verma is 27 runs behind her in the second spot.

Verma’s 76* in the last game was in particular a spectacle as Delhi chased down a 105-run target in just 7.1 overs.

Enough firepower in middle-order

While Delhi’s top-order worries opponents, their middle-order provides no respite either with Marizzane Kapp, Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen coming down the order. The trio has already played some quickfire knocks to define their role in the team.

And with Capsey uncertain, Laura Harris fits in well in that middle-order after a strong domestic season with her side Queensland.

Marizanne Kapp on a high after five-for

Marizanne Kapp showed in the last game that Delhi have little to worry about as far as the new-ball bowling is concerned. The South African broke the backbone of Gujarat batting with her 5/15 spell.

Prior to the spell, Kapp was effective with her batting but her bowling didn’t provide the same value. Saturday’s match against Gujarat also had movement on the offer for seamers and the Protea exploited the condition to her advantage.

Experience pacer Shikha Pandy was right on the money as well with her WPL best spell of 3/26. The Indian international has brought her years of experience into the franchise tournament and has notched up five wickets in four games already.

The spin department is looked after by Jess Jonassen and Capsey but in absence of the latter, the franchise brought in domestic spinner Minnu Mani, who proved economical with 18 runs in three overs but fail to pick any wickets.

Jonassen, on the other hand, has gone without wickets in two games but an experienced spinner of her calibre is hard to keep away from taking scalps for long.

There’s no injury concern for RCB as well but with four matches lost while winning none, the side looks desperate to open their account.

Smriti Mandhana struggles to score big

Smriti Mandhana’s batting average has declined with every game this WPL as starting the season with 35 in the first game, the opener scored just four in the last game. She has accumulated just 82 runs in four games with RCB at the same time staring at an early exit from the title run.

Mandhana is not the only Indian international to disappoint as Richa Ghosh’s 1, 10, 28, 2 sums up the dire strait of the player’s form and her franchise.

Sophia Devine and Ellyse Perry find form

Mandhana’s opening partner Sophia Devine has settled down well in her batting position with

consistent showing in her last two innings. The New Zealand batter scored 36 and 66 in her last two innings and has found further help in Ellyse Perry, who finally converted her good starts into a half-century.

RCB also drafted Erin Burns for pacer Megan Schutt to have an extra batter in the line-up but Burns could only score 12 on her maiden WPL outing.

England captain Heather Knight is yet to make a sizeable contribution with both bat and the ball but the all-rounder is capable of turning the match around on her own. Knight also had Shreyanka Patil and Shahana Pawar as her deputies in the spin department in the last game but the combination didn’t work.

Youngsters Shreyanka and Kanika Ahuja provide the option for slog-over hitting but a key ingredient in experience is unavailable in their matter. Their batting stretches as low as Megan Schutt, who is capable of throwing her bat around.

Patil is also important for the side in death overs as the off-spinner showed her ability to bowl yorkers at the fag ends of the innings.

Experienced left-arm seamer Komal Zanzad was asked to replace Schutt in the line-up but she failed to impress by giving away 22 runs in two overs.

Renuka Singh also continues to struggle in RCB as she gave away 20 runs in two overs and lacked the killer instinct in sub-continent conditions.

Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Bangalore pitch report DEL-W vs RCB-W

DY Patil Stadium has been a batting-friendly wicket with more bounce and pace on the offer than usual Indian wickets. Scoring anything above 180 on the surface will be a difficult chase given the wicket has been naturally slowing down. The square boundaries are shorter for WPL at the venue with batters expectedly targetting the area.

Wicketkeeper R Ghosh

Batter M Lanning, S Mandhana, H knight, S Devine, J Rodrigues, S Verma

All-rounder J Jonassen, E Perry, M Kapp

Bowler S Pandey

Captain and vice-captain choices M Lanning and S Verma’s form makes them a hot pick, especially when RCB bowlers are misfiring. M Kapp is another smart choice given she can make impacts in both innings while S Devine’s current form makes her worth a pick as well.
