Failure to abide by this rule could see drivers issued a range of severe penalties.
Motorists can be fined up to £1,000 and issued up to six penalty points on their driving licence.
Under some circumstances, motorists can even be banned from driving completely.
Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA also urged drivers to secure some training before towing heavier weights.
