Dele Alli’s former boss Karl Robinson has lifted the lid on the former England star’s future transfer plans after a disappointing loan spell in Turkey that has seen the 26-year-old fall from grace, after previously being regarded as one of the brightest talents in world football during his time at Tottenham. Alli has since moved to Everton but failed to make an impact before joining Besiktas on loan for the season.
However, his time in Turkey has seen Alli called out by his own head coach after struggling to break into the team and Turkish outlet Takvim have claimed that Besiktas boss Senol Gunes does not plan to include him in matchday squads for the remainder of the season and he will watch from the stands until he can return to Everton.
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has even previously urged him to consider retiring from football after a similarly underwhelming spell at Goodison. “Dele needs to answer some serious question, for himself, no one else. He has to ask: Do you want to play professional football, or are you not cut out for it?” Collymore wrote in his column for The Mirror in 2022.
“If not, don’t do that, think of conning clubs into giving you a year, based on past reputations, and drift down the ranks. Everton, to Norwich, to the Championship. If no, then get to the end of your contract, and move on with life.
“If he doesn’t want to be a pro footballer, get your head down. I don’t think his clothing, or hair, or what he drives make a big difference but they can allude to a person’s character. I wonder what he is trying to portray. That he wants to be a bit bohemian and has given up on the life of a footballer?”
However, Alli’s former MK Dons boss Robinson believes that Alli is “excited” about his next move and hopes that he can return to England and find a place where he can rediscover his best form. “If he was back over here, he would smile again, he just loves playing football,” Robinson told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.
“I think the punditry here has had a massive impact on him. He got sent off once for punching a West Brom player during a game, and everyone was saying he was doing silly things, and people tried to control him and round him off.
“When he was on little money at MK and Tottenham and overachieving, compared to when he was earning what his talent deserved, there became a different level of expectation, and people judged him in a completely different way even though it’s the exact same person playing the exact same way.
“His first goal for England against France was a worldie, and he scored 50 Premier League goals quicker than Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. I spoke to him to see if he was okay after the earthquake in Turkey, and he was excited about the summer and where he goes [from Everton].”
