Dele Alli quits social media as Everton star undergoes hip surgery

Dele Alli has announced he will be taking a step back from social media after a hip injury caused his season to come to a premature end. The former England international has returned to the UK to complete his recovery with parent club Everton after a disappointing campaign in Turkey at Besiktas.

Alli was once considered to be one of the most exciting talents in world football after making himself a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive Tottenham side. However, he has failed to make the most of his talent in recent years leaving north London to join Everton before he fell further down the football chain with his loan move to Besiktas.

He failed to perform in the Turkish Super Lig and has not featured for the Black Eagles since February after falling badly out of favour with manager Senol Gunes. He will not feature for the club again after suffering a hip injury in training returning to Everton to have an operation and complete his recovery.

He has now announced he will take a break from social media as he focuses on his recovery and getting back to his best on the field.

Writing on Instagram, the 27-year-old said: “Surgery done, all successful and okay. Thank you to every one of you who has sent me messages of support.

“Unfortunately, this means my season has come to an end. I want to take the time to say a big thank you to you Besiktas supporters for all the love that you have shown me whilst being at the club.

“It’s been a tough few weeks and I want to ensure I’m doing everything I can to focus fully on my recovery. I’m gonna take a break from socials, hit my recovery hard, and come at full strength. I will be back when I’m ready. See you all soon.”

Alli caused some controversy this week after pictures on social media appeared to show him with a balloon in his mouth next to some nitrous oxide canisters. Everton boss Sean Dyche has been largely quiet on the allegations but admitted he hopes that the player will use his time out wisely.

“You can only guide people with what you think is good for them,” he said on Thursday. “Eventually players have choices, so we recommend they make good choices.

“But behind that, he’s factually injured. He’s come back with a proper injury that’s going to take some time to get sorted out, so he’ll use that period wisely, I hope.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Alli will be able to rediscover his best form following a number of years on the sidelines.
