Dele Alli’s still younger than 10 stars as Everton ace rebuilds career

Former Tottenham star Dele Alli still has age on his side as he looks to rebuild his career after undergoing hip surgery following his return to the UK. The 27-year-old shot to stardom from a young age and was considered one of the most exciting talents in world football after making himself a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive Tottenham side.

After making 181 appearances for Spurs, scoring 51 goals, the England international has struggled since his move to Everton, playing just 13 matches since his arrival at Goodison Park. The Toffees were understood to be paying £40million for the attacking midfielder based on clauses and milestones being met but they have yet to pay a penny so far.

The 27-year-old returned to England from his loan at Besiktas to undergo hip surgery and hit the headlines for the wrong reasons after being pictured with a balloon in his mouth while surrounded by canisters and alcohol in a Salford apartment. Alli was pictured with a group of people sitting at a table littered with canisters, which appeared to contain nitrous oxide.

Everton manager Sean Dyche said: “You can only guide people with what you think is good for them. Eventually players have choices, so we recommend they make good choices. But behind that, he’s factually injured. He’s come back with a proper injury that’s going to take some time to get sorted out, so he’ll use that period wisely, I hope.”

Alli has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at Everton running until the end of next season, but if relegated the Toffees could try and get rid of the star amid a £10m clause in the deal and the attacker thought to be earning £100,000-a-week. The former Tottenham star still has years left to rebuild his football career with a host of popular players all older than him, though some may surprise you.

Among them are his former England team-mates, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who is two years older at the age of 29, while former Spurs team-mate Eric Dier is also two years older than Alli. Somewhat surprisingly Manchester City star Jack Grealish was born the year before the former Tottenham star.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw will have also come through the England age groups with both Alli and Grealish and is 27. Brentford and England attacker Ivan Toney is another star who has recently forced himself into Gareth Southgate’s plans and is a month older than Alli.

Kevin De Bruyne has hit the ground running for Manchester City this season and comes with vast experience at the age of 31, while City star Bernardo Silva is also a year older than Alli. Liverpool have struggled this season with an ageing team and amongst them Naby Keita (28), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (29) and Andy Robertson (29) are some of the fresher faces who are all older than Alli.

And that proves that Alli still has years left to get back to his very best. It would be a remarkable comeback if he can do so, and one that all football fans would love to see.
