Meanwhile, the accused Poonawala, who appeared before the Saket court through a virtual conference, asked the court to provide the chargesheet to him and not to his lawyer as he is considering changing his advocate.

“Please give the chargesheet to me and not to my lawyer. I do not want to provide the chargesheet to my lawyer as I am considering another lawyer”, he submitted.

On this, the court said that if, until the next date of the hearing another counsel appears for Poonawala, the chargesheet would be given to him.

Poonawala is accused of murdering and sawing the body of his live-in partner Walkar into 35 pieces. The alleged incident took place in May last year. According to the police, he kept the body pieces in a fridge at his residence in Mehrauli in South Delhi before dumping them in a jungle over several days.

Poonawala and Walkar, originally from Vasai area in Mumbai, were in a relationship and moved to Delhi in May 2022. Her murder came to light when a friend informed Walkar’s father that he had not heard from Walkar for nearly two months. Unable to contact Walkar, her father informed Mumbai police in October. The Mumbai police’s probe led police to the couple’s rented room in south Delhi Chhattarpur Pahadi.

The key breakthrough came when 13 decomposed body parts, mostly pieces of bones, retrieved on Poonawala’s insistence led to a DNA match that confirmed the 27-year-old was murdered.

Poonawala was arrested in November last year. He is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
