Denise Welch has admitted she is ‘glad’ she broke Covid restrictions to visit her gravely ill father, while calling for an end to ‘constantly propping up the NHS’.

The Loose Women presenter has been mourning the death of her beloved father Vin Welch, who died in September aged 84 after battling various health issues, including pulmonary fibrosis.

Denise was able to spend time with Vin in December 2020 on what became his last Christmas. However, she drove up to see him at a time when the country was under strict Covid rules, which included a ban on travelling to visit family and friends indoors.

The TV star is now campaigning for an end to ‘cruel’ Covid restrictions, particularly with care homes.

Speaking to GB News’ Dan Wootton on Wednesday evening, Denise said: ‘I’m glad I broke the rules [in 2020] because it turned out it was my last Christmas with my dad.

‘It was possibly the most heartbreaking thing I’ve been through in my entire life.’

Denise, 63, claimed that nurses told her there was ‘hardly any Covid in the hospital’ where her father was being treated.

She stated: ‘We can listen to the NHS chiefs and the Government but when you listen to the people on the shop floor and they’re saying there’s hardly any Covid in the hospital… if my sister and I hadn’t been in that hospital with my dad at certain times, he would have died.’

The former Coronation Street actress highlighted the importance of hospital patients having loved ones around, as she noticed aspects of her father’s care that fell short due to staff being overworked.

Denise continued: ‘These people are going to die lonely deaths if they don’t see family and friends…

‘It is the hill that I will die on. We can’t go on like this, it’s insane. The collateral damage of Covid has been absolutely horrendous.

‘We can’t live our lives just constantly propping up the NHS… propping up this absolute disaster of a system.’

Denise stated that she has been jabbed but is ‘pro-choice’ when it comes to the Covid vaccine.
