Deontay Wilder says Tyson Fury ‘has to retire’ ahead of potential unification fight

Deontay Wilder has fired a shot at Tyson Fury and implied the British heavyweight star must stay retired. The Bronze Bomber suggested his former rival is facing a number of issues outside the ring that is keeping the Brit from returning to fight.

After knocking out Dillian Whyte in April at Wembley Stadium, Fury announced his retirement but the 33-year-old has reportedly continued to train twice a day and remains the WBC champion. The Gypsy King is considered the best heavyweight in the division and arguably of his generation after defeating the likes of Wladimir Klitschko and Wilder, with his epic grudge trilogy against the American captivating the boxing world.

The first bout of the three between Fury and Wilder ended in a draw despite the American appearing to have Fury out cold. The Gypsy King got off the canvas and battled back to tie the fight.

Fury won the second two fights via a tactical knockout and a knockout consecutively to cement his position atop the division. After his retirement, Fury’s undefeated record stands at 32 wins and one draw.

Wilder is the number one contender for the WBC so the American is in line to get the first shot at the belt should it be eventually vacated by Fury. It could also see Wilder take on Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua in a blockbuster undisputed clash to unify the heavyweight division.

The news of Fury’s sudden retirement will still come as a surprise to many. His promoter Frank Warren has already suggested his client has ‘itchy feet’ and he has been searching for his next opponent and next opportunity to enter the ring.

It remains to be seen whether Fury is adamant that he has indeed fought his final bout. Few people believed his initial retirement claim, and less will likely believe his latest announcement as earlier this week his US promoter Bob Arum even suggested Fury should not be taken seriously.
