Derek Chisora advised how to beat Tyson Fury by Deontay Wilder’s coach

Deontay Wilder may have lost his trilogy feud against Tyson Fury, but coach Malik Scott shared some wisdom with Derek Chisora ahead of his own clash with the Gypsy King. ‘War’ will face Fury in his own trilogy showdown on December 3, having previously lost to the current WBC champion in 2011 and 2014.

The fight has been criticised in some quarters by those who consider it a pointless exercise for Fury considering he’s already defeated Chisora twice. Those same detractors have suggested the Mancunian would be better off attempting to unify the belts against Oleksandr Usyk, or finally confirming a date against long-time rival Anthony Joshua.

But Scott—Wilder’s head trainer for his decisive October 2021 defeat to Fury—suggested Chisora has the opportunity to pull off one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing memory if he can expose a perceived chink in Fury’s armour. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ was unable to get the better of his English enemy in three attempts, but his coach believes he’s gleaned the knowledge necessary to help Chisora break the cycle.

“You’ve got to take advantage of his vulnerabilities right there and Derek has to do that,” Scott told BT Sport. “He can’t make silent agreements when he gets close, he’s got to work his free hand, you’ve got to beat Tyson Fury up on the inside as much as you can.

“What he can’t do is get close and allow Tyson to hold him. Tyson Fury, when he is in control, is very vulnerable.”

As well as his experience cornering Wilder for his three encounters with Fury, Scott also sparred with Fury during his own boxing career. The 42-year-old succumbed to the Gypsy King first-hand, having previously revealed he ‘burst his ear drum’ in the process.
