Diageo boss Ivan Menezes has passed away after a brief illness, the drinks company announced on Wednesday morning.
Menezes, who was chief executive for 10 years, had been in hospital being treated for medical conditions including a stomach ulcer, and had suffered a setback last weekend. As a result, the multinational company announced on Monday that incoming chief executive Debra Crew would step in a month early.
“This is an incredibly sad day. Ivan was undoubtedly one of the finest leaders of his generation,” said Diageo chair Javier Ferrán.
“We are truly privileged to have had the opportunity to work alongside such a thoughtful and passionate colleague and friend — a true gentleman. He has built an extraordinary legacy.”
