Australia’s netball Diamonds have responded after a dismal start, rallying to beat England 61-55 in their opening match at the international Quad Series in Cape Town.
The reigning champions maintained their domination over the Roses, but had to rouse themselves against their old rivals at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Saturday after going nine goals down early in the first quarter.
Coach Stacy Marinkovich’s team recovered to reduce the deficit to four by halftime but began to find their rhythm and turn the tide in the second quarter, grabbing the leading briefly before going in at the interval 32-31 down.
Australia then took control after another slow start to the third quarter, going on a remarkable 11-goal tear to lead by seven going into the final act.
The Commonwealth champs stretched their lead to 10 before a belated rally from the English narrowed the final gap.
Earlier, world champions New Zealand had defeated South Africa 61-41, the Silver Ferns setting up a key clash with the Diamonds on Sunday perfectly thanks to their brilliant third quarter in which they outscored the hosts 20-5.
