Opening weekend for Spider-Man: No Way Home has come and gone, and with it, some amazing records were broken. The movie is still in its first weekend, so plenty more could change, but the film is certainly trending in the right direction. As you can imagine, the film is full of easter eggs and all sorts of Spidey goodness. There is one little egg that leaped off the screen, and it had to do with a reference to a fan favorite. Caution: the rest of this article contains spoilers.
With Andrew Garfield and Charlie Cox both now confirmed to be the poster children for non-disclosure agreements, some other amazing throwbacks were seen in No Way Home. Actually, one of the premier points of the film was the way the various Spider-Men made amends with some of their most heated rivals. For example, Tobey Maguire and Alfred Molina had a touching moment of atonement with each other. Likewise, Andrew Garfield and Jamie Foxx had a similar moment. In the aftermath of the trio of wall crawlers taking down an immensely powerful Electro, Andrew’s Spider-Man has a soft conversation with Foxx’s Max Dillon. It’s this interaction that has a particular meaningful insight into one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, Miles Morales.
Shortly after his defeat, Max is able to look upon an unmasked Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man #3 and in a slightly humourous exchange comments that he has a young face, but he was surprised he wasn’t black. He further commented that the way he always helped poor people, he just assumed under the mask was a black kid. He even took his newfound knowledge of the multiverse and applied it, saying there had to be a black Spider-Man out there. This is a direct reference to Miles Morales and the character’s role as Spider-Man. The reference makes twice that Miles is referenced in the Homecoming trilogy. The first was in Homecoming itself in a deleted scene where Donald Glover’s character Aaron Davis references his nephew as ‘Miles.’
Max Dillon’s comment may not mean much in the general scheme of things, but little does he know that Earth-616 doesn’t have to reach far for their black Spider-Man. Aaron Davis’s phone call, deleted scene or not (in the movie cut itself, he references his nephew, leaving him nameless) directly confirms Miles Morales in the current MCU. Note, I am referring to it here as the MCU because at the time that Homecoming was released, the multiverse did not exist. Additionally, the term still does apply for events that directly occur only on Earth-616, such as Miles’s general existence.
The comment can go a long way in setting up future movies. Recently, Sony announced that they were interested in doing Spider-Man 4, 5, and 6. With the end credit scene essentially establishing some sort of Venom character upcoming, it’s a good bet that a now anonymous Peter Parker could enlist some help, and even play mentor to a young Miles Morales. It will still be a few more years before we see where this particular thread of the MCM leads, but something I have learned watching these films since 2008’s Iron Man, even the most insignificant detail can prove valuable. Max Dillon’s comment is certainly no exception. Catch Spider-Man: No Way Home in a theater near you. Are you excited about Miles Morales potentially coming to the MCM? Let us know below!
