Mr Bosdet continued, saying: “Although [it is] 15 percent to 20 percent more fuel efficient than petrol cars out on the open road, diesel being more than 20p a litre dearer wipes out much of the saving.
“It has been the shock at seeing this record gap on forecourt price boards that has led to drivers asking the AA: is it true?
“Sadly, looking at wholesale road fuel costs recently, it is correct – although there is still a lot of price variation among retailers at the moment.”
This comes as a review by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that the “principal drivers” of high fuel costs are rising oil prices and increased profit margins at oil refineries.
