Dillian Whyte’s showdown with Otto Wallin this month has been called off after the Briton suffered an injury in training.
Whyte was scheduled to headline the card in London on 30 October against the Swedish heavyweight.
But just 11 days before fight night at the O2 Arena, The Sun report a shoulder injury has left the Brixton heavyweight unable to compete.
Whyte has been preparing at his regular training camp in Portugal and was scheduled to fly back to the UK at the start of next week.
After a shock knockout defeat to Alexander Povetkin last year, Whyte reclaimed his status as the no1 contender for the WBC title with dominant victory over the Russian in their March rematch.
The winner of his showdown with Wallin was due to take on Tyson Fury for his WBC heavyweight belt next year.
In the days before Fury’s trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder, the WBC confirmed that the winner of that fight would have 30 days to agree a unification bout with new IBF, WBO and WBA champion Oleksandr Usyk.
But with Usyk heading towards a rematch with Anthony Joshua next year, Whyte would have been next in line – providing he retained his status as WBC ‘interim’ champion against Wallin.
The injury setback however will delay those plans.
Wallin had been confident of causing a shock against Whyte and earning a second shot at Fury – the man responsible for his sole professional defeat.
The Swede pushed Fury hard in their 2019 meeting, opening up a huge gash above his opponent’s eye that threatened to force a stoppage.
After some expert work from his cutman however, ‘The Gypsy King’ saw out an unanimous decision win.
