Dim Sum Basket, and its buzzy egg tarts, has arrived in Brentwood

East Contra Costa County dumpling enthusiasts rejoiced when Dumpling Hours opened a new outpost of the wildly-popular Walnut Creek restaurant in Brentwood earlier this summer.

Now, a family-owned dim sum restaurant with roots in Guangdong, China, has debuted about two miles away. Dim Sum Basket, located at 3120 Balfour Road, Suite C, specializes in fried, baked and steamed dumplings, an array of buns, baked egg tarts and Hong Kong-style milk teas. The restaurant is in its soft opening, with hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Cousins and co-owners John Chen and Max Chan are no strangers to the restaurant business. Chen runs a thriving catering business in San Francisco. Before Dim Sum Basket, Chan was the co-owner of Acai R in San Francisco. During the pandemic, they witnessed an exodus from San Francisco to East Bay suburbs, like Brentwood, and decided to fill the dim sum void.

“It was an idea to resurrect our family business, a dim sum restaurant and bakery from China many decades ago, owned by Max’s father and my father, who are brothers,” Chen says.

The menu offers generous portions at affordable prices. Most dim sum is about $2, including the fried shrimp balls, baked pork buns and steamed pot stickers. Hard-to-find fried taro puffs are $1.75, and the lotus leaf-wrapped sticky rice filled with pork, Chinese sausage and egg, is $4.

Don’t miss the baked egg tarts. We hear they rival the best in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Details: https://dimsumbasket.square.site
