Director Chad Stahelski recently discussed the potential for a fifth installment in the highly successful John Wick franchise. Despite the positive reception of John Wick: Chapter 4, the future of the series remains uncertain. In an interview with The Direct, Stahelski expressed gratitude for the support and interest shown by fans, acknowledging that the franchise has garnered a significant following. While the John Wick franchise continues to expand, with a series and a spin-off film led by Ana De Armas on the horizon, Stahelski emphasized the importance of giving the iconic character a well-deserved break.
Following the events of Chapter 4, the director intends to provide John Wick with some respite, allowing the character to rest and potentially explore new dimensions in future installments. Stahelski recognized the business aspect of continuing a successful franchise, but also highlighted the challenge of maintaining individuality and avoiding repetition. He expressed his desire to find a delicate balance between delivering what fans love about the series and introducing fresh elements that keep the storytelling engaging and innovative.
“Look, I mean, this in a good way, it’s a business. When you have something successful, yeah, of course, you want to keep doing it. But it’s very easy to be repetitive. The trick is how you be repetitive with individuality. How do you put your authorship or your agency into something that’s obviously been done three times before?”
According to Stahelski, they approached John Wick: Chapter 4 with the intention of leaving nothing on the table. They poured their creativity and energy into the project, pushing boundaries and giving it their all. The director believes they have achieved a sense of closure with Chapter 4, considering it a fulfilling conclusion to the story arc established in the previous three films.
“The real question you ask yourself is not, ‘Do I want it?’ Yes, I wouldn’t mind doing it. We just tried to knock it out of the park. We tried to put everything on the table, take nothing, and leave it all. Like, Fuck it, every idea. We’re not saving anything. We’re not trying to build. Just everything you got, leave it there. We feel we put everything we had into John Wick 4, and we feel we completed the cycle. We feel like we ended it. So, we feel like, ‘You know, that was a great way to wrap up the previous three films and the fourth and deliver something satisfying and fun.’”
The Continental Set to Expand John Wick’s World
The Continental is an upcoming miniseries that is set to expand the world of the popular John Wick franchise. The series will transport viewers back to the 1970s and delve into the captivating backstory of Winston Scott, a trusted friend and colleague of John Wick. Played by Ian McShane in the original movies, Winston Scott will take center stage in this new narrative as audiences witness his journey towards becoming the proprietor of The Continental hotel. This renowned establishment serves as a safe haven for assassins, strictly forbidding any business dealings within its walls. The Continental will also explore significant real-world events of the era, including the rise of the American Mafia’s economic power and the impact of the Great Garbage Strike.
To portray the younger iteration of Winston Scott, the talented actor Colin Woodell has been cast in the series. Woodell is known for his notable roles in Ambulance and The Flight Attendant. Joining Woodell in the cast of The Continental are a host of other talented actors, including Mel Gibson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Jessica Allain, Mishel Prada, Nhung Kate, Ben Robson, Peter Greene, and Ayomide Adegun. Adegun will portray a young version of Charon, a character originally played by the late Lance Reddick in the John Wick series. While an exact release date has yet to be announced, the premiere of The Continental on the Peacock streaming platform is expected to take place in September 2023.
