The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday filed a 430-page chargesheet against Kanpur’s perfume trader Piyush Jain. The DRI is probing the case of 23 kg gold found from Piyush’s Kannauj house.
WHAT DOES THE CHARGESHEET SAY
The chargesheet was filed in the special chief judicial magistrate court in Kanpur Nagar. The DRI submitted a report by the Central Revenue Control Laboratory in New Delhi saying that the purity of the gold seized from Piyush’s house was found to be 99.83 per cent.
The DRI’s lawyer, Ambareesh Tandon said that there was no mention of the gold in Piyush’s income tax returns.

Piyush had filed a bail application in the court of the district magistrate. The next hearing on the case will take place on May 28.
Tandon said the court has taken cognizance of the chargesheet.
WHAT IS THE CASE
In December 2021, the Ahmedabad unit of Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) conducted a raid at Piyush’s Kannauj house and seized over Rs 195 crore in cash, 23 kilograms of gold and sandalwood oil worth Rs 6 crore. Of the 23kg of gold, 11 kg had a foreign mark. The DGGI admitted that this gold was smuggled from abroad.
During interrogations in jail, Piyush did not reveal to the DRI officials where he purchased the gold in India.
