This summer, Sea Island, a Forbes Five-Star resort, invites children of all ages to experience a one-of-a-kind sightseeing “Sea-fari.” Come enjoy a coastal spin on a traditional sightseeing safari. The Sea Island Sea-fari showcases some of the resort’s most family-friendly nature activities and allows adventurers to witness the Sea Island “Big 5” — falcons, horses, dolphins, turtles, and shorebirds.
Throughout this self-guided journey, kids can track their progress in a specially designed ‘Sea-fari Passport.’ Created especially for small hands and big spirits, the passport is aimed to educate and inspire the next generation of nature enthusiasts. Children (and the young at heart) can pick up this complimentary passport at Sea Island Beach Club, starting on June 21st – the official first day of summer. Best of all, once children have completed an activity in each category, they will be able to turn in their passport to receive a complimentary Gold Brick Sundae from Wonderland.
Take a look at what the Sea Island “Big 5” includes:
Hawks and Owls — Falconry at Rainbow Island: Led by Sea Island’s resident Falconers, guests will get up close and personal with birds of prey during the Falconry Meet & Greet or when taking a walk with a Harris hawk during the Hawk Walk, Guests will learn how Sea Island continues the ancient art of falconry and witness the high-flying action firsthand, enjoying the thrill of having a raptor fly to their gloved fist. Be sure to visit Sea Island’s other winged residents — Scout the Eurasian eagle-owl and Owlivia the Eastern screech owl.
Dolphins — Fishing and boating excursions: Sea Island offers plenty of chances for children of all ages to get out on the water, including a Kids’ Family Fishing Trip and Salt Marsh Dolphin Tour. However, guests will be able to spot more than dolphin as they cruise through tidal marshes – they will be able to see and learn about other marine life, including trout, redfish, tarpon, and whiting. For guests who prefer to stay on dry land, Fishing and Crabbing on The Cloister Dock is another popular family-friendly activity and is known to have frequent dolphin-spottings.
Sea Turtles — Sea Turtle Dawn Patrol and Sea Turtle Education and Night Walk: From dawn to dusk, there are opportunities for children of all ages to engage in the turtle conservation program at Sea Island. During Dawn Patrol, guests can join the Nature Team as they patrol the beach for nesting females, hatchlings, and newly laid nests. The Sea Turtle Education and Night Walk teaches guests about sea turtle life history followed by a beach walk in search of the turtles in the night.
Horses — Horseback Riding at Rainbow Island: For a unique way to explore the habitats of the Georgia coast, guests are invited to enjoy horseback rides along the south end of Sea Island beach during a Beach Horseback Ride, along the marsh during a Marsh Horseback Ride, or through the woods during a Wooded Estate Ride. For less experienced youngsters, ages 3-10 years old, The Stables at Frederica offers 20-minute guided pony rides on the north end of St. Simons Island.
Shorebirds — Birding golf cart tour: Rather than staying in one spot, Sea Island guests can utilize the property’s golf carts for a unique, on the move birding experience. Binoculars will be provided for those trying to catch a glimpse of some of the island’s shorebirds, eagles and more.
