DIY expert shares six jobs to ‘never’ try yourself

Tim Warren, DIY expert from Adkwik, said: “As with any weekend, some people like to use their days off to complete work around their house.

“Even though there are many relatively simple and easy DIY jobs, they’re a few that you should never try yourself and always hire a professional for.”

1. Plumbing

The pro explained: “Although it may be tempting to install items such as radiators, showers, bathrooms and kitchens to save yourself money, these jobs can go very wrong easily.

“This can result in expensive repair bills and damage so it is best avoided.” Many bathroom installations result in bathtubs and showers not being sealed correctly, leading to severe leaks.

Another issue people may find is a tub not being secured in place, which can result in it moving or even falling through the floor.

2. Stripping paint

The DIY expert said: “Depending on the age of the paint, this can potentially pose some health risks.

“Paintwork that was completed before the 1970s may have used lead-based paints, meaning that it is best to call in a specialist to do it safely.”

3. Fitting a dishwasher

Appliances such as dishwashers need to be connected to both water and electricity, meaning the installation can sometimes be a tricky process.

A professional will have the right tools and experience to fit the appliance and ensure that it will not leak or become damaged.

4. Roof repairs

A roof protects you from the elements, but only if it is installed or repaired correctly, so this one should be avoided at all costs

Tim continued: “Regardless of how good you think your balance might be, one misstep on a roof can quickly result in a fatal fall.

“Professional roofers can safely investigate issues without risking further damage, such as the roof collapsing.”

5. Knocking down a wall

It might seem easy enough to take a hammer and do this job yourself, but there are essential checks which need to be carried out first.

One wrong move may destroy a load-bearing wall and will lead to things collapsing, including the ceiling.

If you’re looking to have a load-bearing wall removed, the experts at Checkatrade said this may cost in the region of £1,250 for a single doorway.

For Britons looking to create a large open-plan area, this could be pushed up to £1,750 but it is essential.

6. Cutting down trees

Tim explained: “Large trees can cause a number of issues to nearby houses, but they require specialist removal as it is not a simple task.

“Cutting a heavy trunk or branch incorrectly may result in damage to your neighbour’ properties. There is also a risk of falling yourself as well as branches injuring those on the ground.”

A professional tree surgeon will know exactly how to control the removal of a tree, with experience and the tools to do the job properly.

The DIY pro added: “Before attempting any DIY jobs, ensure that you have the right tools and protective equipment. If you do not feel fully confident or are worried about your safety, it will always be better in the long term if you call a trained professional.”
