Doc Ock References Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in New No Way Home Footage

Peter Parker is on the hunt for some multiverse men in the newest trailer for the upcoming Marvel sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home, as Alfred Molina’s returning Doctor Octopus angrily pines for Tobey Maguire’s version of the beloved web-slinger. The recently released promo from Sony Pictures UK further teases the various villains that will enter the MCU, as well as the trio of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, Zendaya’s MJ, and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds who will join forces more than ever before to save the world.

One of the standout moments from the brief clip though is Doctor Strange and Peter’s interrogation of Otto Octavius, who remains adamant that Holland’s iteration of the character is not the one he is familiar with. Imprisoned in the Sanctum Sanctorum, Doc Ock, played once again by Spider-Man 2’s Alfred Molina, insists that Tom Holland is not Peter Parker, which acts as further confirmation that this version of the supervillain has indeed come from the franchise led by Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi.

Rumors continue to circulate regarding appearances from past Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, and this new footage is sure to ensure that they continue. For what it’s worth, nothing has been officially confirmed, and Garfield is over answering questions about it; “This is about this Spider-Men photoshop thing that we talked about on Jimmy Fallon. Listen, at this point… I’m done,” The Amazing Spider-Man star said. “We’ll all find out when the movie comes out. And we’ll either be very disappointed, or we’ll be very happy, or someone will say, ‘I told you so,’ another person will say, ‘I told you so.’ We’ll all find out. I’m sorry in advance.”

A newer, and equally interesting slice of speculation surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home suggests that, despite being imprisoned in the beginning, Doc Ock will join forces with Holland’s superhero in order to stop Doctor Strange from sending them all back to their original universes and thus their inevitable doom.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will pick up with the Marvel hero following Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man being exposed by Mysterio at the end of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Thanks to this, his life and reputation have been turned upside down, and thus Parker decides to ask his friend and colleague Dr. Stephen Strange to help restore his secret identity with magic. Parker’s inability to stop talking during the spell causes things to go horribly awry and breaks open the multiverse, allowing supervillains from alternate realities who have previously fought a Spider-Man to arrive.

Directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, and Benedict Wong. The movie will also see the return of an assortment of other previous villains alongside Molina’s Doc Ock, including Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, Thomas Haden Church as The Sandman, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 17, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
