Top Fremantle draftee Jye Amiss will make his debut for the Dockers when they take on North Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Friday night.
Amiss was recruited by Fremantle with pick eight in last year’s draft after a stellar season for East Perth in the WAFL colts, kicking 51 goals from 15 games.
The 18-year-old has transferred that form into senior football, kicking nine goals in three league games for Peel Thunder this year, including eight in the past two games.
A hamstring injury to Matt Taberner and the loss of Rory Lobb to COVID-19 protocols has opened the door for Amiss to make his debut when the Dockers look for their seventh win to start the season.
“It’s pretty crazy, I didn’t think it would come this quick but I’m just so excited,” Amiss told the club’s website.
“It’s unfortunate circumstances to earn a debut in, but it does open up opportunities. I’ll just go out there and play my role and do my best.
“I feel my form in the WAFL has been good. Having played on more mature defenders is going to help me, especially coming into the AFL where there’s going to be even bigger bodies as well.”
Amiss said he expected a number of family and friends to travel up from his hometown of Busselton to see him play his first game in the purple.
“I reckon there will be a few coming up, there’s a big group of Busselton boys that are getting around it. That will be pretty cool,” Amiss said.
“Friday night footy as well, which is always good fun. It’s going to be pretty exciting, so I can’t wait.”
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir praised Amiss’ form when he announced his debut to the group on Wednesday morning.
“Mate, I’ve been super pumped with your attention to detail. You’ve been a pro since you’ve come to the club,” Amiss said.
“Your form on the field the last three weeks has been outstanding. Your ability to lead at the foot and your natural forward craft is coming to the fore. And you’ve been hitting the scoreboard.
“You fully deserve the opportunity, so well done.”
