Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker replaced by Lydia West as link to showrunner unveiled?

0

Jodie Whittaker announced she was stepping down from the role of Doctor Who earlier this year and fans were bereft. Many have speculated who could take over as the Time Lord and the latest bookies odds have revealed It’s A Sin star Lydia West is favourite to take up the mantle.

BBC viewers will recognise Lydia from Years and Years and It’s A Sin which were both written by Russell T Davies.

Russell is returning as showrunner for Doctor Who when Chris Chibnall steps down after Jodie’s exit.

Chris and Jodie worked together on Broadchurch so it wouldn’t be surprising if Russell chose to work with someone who has been on another show of his.

Lydia is now leading the bets to take over after Olly Alexander was predicted to be the new Time Lord.

The actress is one of three It’s A Sin stars in the race to replace Jodie.

The bookies now make it just a three-horse race between Lydia (3/1), Olly (4/1) and Omari Douglas (5/1) to take over from Whittaker on Doctor Who, with every other name in the betting being 6/1 or bigger as things stand.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “The race to replace Jodie Whittaker is well and truly on and the odds suggest no less than three It’s A Sin stars will do battle to play the Time Lord next.”

Lydia has the backing of Jodie herself to take over.

Speaking earlier in the week on BBC Radio 1, the star said: “If we had the power to choose, I’m going to pick an actress who I think is really exciting and I think would be phenomenal, is Lydia West. If I had the power!”

Meanwhile, Jodie has admitted she is worried she may have made the wrong choice about leaving the BBC sci-fi series.

“When I first signed up, I signed up to do three seasons, and I can tell you now there is many a day where I had a wobble and I felt, ‘Have I made a terrible mistake?’” she explained.

“At any point I could have probably changed, but once we started to shoot the final series I think that’s when my biggest wobble happened and I thought, ‘What the heck am I doing, leaving the best job I’ve ever done?'”

Jodie added: “Doctor Who is the best job because it’s happened at this moment, and no one can ever take these memories away and hopefully I’m still going to be living my best life in a few years to come.

“But I just felt that this show deserves new energy.

“I don’t know if I’m happy with my decision even now, I’m still upset about it!”

Eve of the Daleks will be broadcast on New Year’s Day on BBC One.

The synopsis for the festive special reads: “New Year’s Eve. Sarah is working – again. Nick is her only customer – again. Same old same old.

“Except this year, their countdown to midnight will be the strangest and deadliest they have ever known. Why is an executioner Dalek targeting these two people, in this place, on this night?

“Why are they having to live through the same moments again? Can the Doctor, Yaz and Dan save them and survive into the New Year?”

Doctor Who airs New Year’s Day on BBC One at 7pm.
