Does this Mazda patent point to a rotary-powered hybrid?

There has been a lot of talk of the rotary engine making a comeback at Mazda recently. The brand’s first EV, the MX-30, is slated to at some point receive a range-extending rotary, making it a PHEV of sorts, but the timeline for that remains fuzzy.

Less blurry is a new patent filed by the Japanese automaker that suggests there are other plans still for the unconventional gas engine.

Reported on by Auto Evolution , these European patent drawings show a RWD sports car with a 48V hybrid setup and a three-rotor engine, likely selected for its compact size.

The drivetrain appears mid-mounted, sitting behind the front axle, and includes a cooling system for both electrical and ICE components. Additional sketches outline a RWD car with a transaxle and AWD functionality thanks to electric motors powering the front wheels. In-wheel motors are also mentioned in the document, though no such technology is currently commercially available.

It’s important to note that the filings do not directly translate to an upcoming model — it could be something, and it could also be nothing.

Among the “somethings” it could be is a two-door Mazda 3 hatchback. CarBuzz recently spotted these other Mazda patent drawings featuring a car with a similar shape as the Mazda 3, but with just two doors, suggesting the brand may add a more compact option to the popular car’s lineup.

Time will tell, and we’ll report back here when it does.
