Doja Cat’s eyebrow art is having a major moment on TikTok and democratising makeup trends

Feeling artistic? Then the real estate a few centimetres north of your eyes should be your new focus. Doja Cat’s eyebrow art is inspiring beauty content creators on TikTok and Instagram to channel their inner Picasso – and with good reason.

It wasn’t that long ago when the bushy, brushed-up ‘Cara Brow’ ruled supreme. The knock-on effect was that anyone who had been overzealous with their plucking as a teenager felt an enormous amount of pressure to grow the hairs back. Not to mention the confidence-crushing toll it took on those suffering from alopecia or the side effects of cancer treatment who felt completely alienated from a beauty aesthetic that only championed a fluffy, full-brow look.

Now, thankfully, eyebrows are experiencing a cultural shift and nothing is off the table. Eyebrows have become democratised and are being hailed as a new way to express individuality, whether you prefer them shaved off, a ’90s skinny brow or you decide to go down the bleached brow route. But one of the prettiest iterations right now is bare skin (real or hairs blanketed with concealer), playfully painted with swirls and emoji-like flowers using liquid brow liner and the best eyebrow pencils.

Given Y2K beauty trends have us in a chokehold, it’s perhaps no surprise that drawn-on brows, made famous by Gwen Stefani in the ’90s, is back with a vengeance. But now a subset of creatives is elevating the look even further by experimenting with elaborate eyebrow art.

Despite the fact that it’s currently trending, eyebrow art isn’t exactly new. BIPOC communities have long championed the look as has celebrity Jazelle Zanaughtti (aka @uglyworldwide on Instagram) who has treated her followers to drawn-on stick people and even applied stick-on numbers onto her shaved off brows.
