With the Miami Dolphins having placed their top two running backs on the COVID-19 list over the weekend, they are turning to one of their former star players as a possible reinforcement.
According to NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus, via WSVN sports anchor Josh Moser, the Dolphins are bringing in Lamar Miller today for a workout.
Miller, who the Dolphins took in the fourth round of the 2012 draft, spent four seasons in Miami, rushing for 2,930 yards and 19 touchdowns. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry.
The former Miami Hurricanes star then spent three years with the Houston Texans before suffering a torn ACL in 2018. After sitting out the 2019 season while rehabbing his knee, he played in only one game for the Chicago Bears in 2020. He was briefly on the Washington Football Team’s training camp roster this offseason before joining the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad. He was released last month.
Myles Gaskin, the Dolphins’ leading rusher, was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list on Friday. On Saturday, Salvon Ahmed, his college teammate at Washington and close friend, also tested positive and was placed on the list.
Because both tailbacks are vaccinated it is possible they could be removed from the COVID-19 list before Sunday’s home game against the New York Jets.
The Dolphins, who average an NFL-worst 3.3 rushing yards per game, were already thin at the position after Patrick Laird was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
Tailback Malcolm Brown, who served as a starter earlier this season, also has been sidelined with a knee injury. Brown, who was placed on injured reserve in October, has been working out with trainers the past two weeks and appears to be ready to return to practice.
The Dolphins recently acquired Phillip Lindsay, a former Pro Bowl running back who was claimed off waivers in late November. Lindsay, however, missed last Sunday’s win over the New York Giants with an ankle injury.
The Dolphins also have ex-Hurricanes star Duke Johnson and former Cincinnati Bengals standout Gerrid Doaks on the practice squad. One of them could be promoted and made available to play against the Jets.
