Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill predicts he’ll become first to break 2,000 yards in 2023

Tyreek Hill wants to make 2023 his own Y2K.

The Miami Dolphins’ top receiver predicted on his podcast that he will set the NFL’s single-season receiving record this season by becoming the first to top 2,000 yards.

Former Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson holds the record with 1,964 yards in 2012.

“I will break 2,000 yards next year, bro,” Hill said recently on the “It Needed to be Said” podcast. “2,000 yards was on my bucket list to get before I leave this league … 2,000 yards and another Super Bowl — we getting that. Believe that.”

On one hand, Hill was on pace for 2,000 yards after the first nine games of last season, and the NFL season is one game longer now (17) than it was when Johnson set the record.

On the other, Hill has to share the ball with another top receiver (teammate Jaylen Waddle) and an improved cast of supporting receivers, his pursuit is subject to derailment by injury to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and he is under NFL investigation.

Hill set career highs with 119 catches for 1,710 yards last season and those numbers might have been higher if not for the four games he played with backup quarterbacks Teddy Brigewater and Skylar Thompson.

If nothing else, Hill certainly proved in his first year with the Dolphins that his success is not a by-product of playing with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I feel like I’ve got the right tools around me,” he said. “I’ve got obviously the most accurate quarterback in the NFL, I’ve got one of the best head coaches in the NFL and also my position coach is a monster also.

So just having those three things and me just keeping the same mindset each and every day that I want to get better and I want to break the record and I do want to break the record. So I feel like this is one of those years that I can achieve it.”

Hill, 29, could be running out of time to achieve his goal.

He said earlier this offseason that he will prematurely retire after the 2025 season, so he only has three more opportunities to found a 2,000 club.

Will he be sidelined for any of 2023?

Hill allegedly struck a 57-year-old boat employee in the neck during a dispute at a marina in South Florida and then offered $200 to the worker.

The league is investigating the incident but typically delays its punishment decisions until after the criminal process plays out in courts.
