Double Oscar-winning actress and former Labour MP Glenda Jackson has died aged 87.

Her agent announced her death following “a brief illness” at her home in Blackheath, south-east London.

In a statement, Lionel Larner said: “‘Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side.

“She recently completed filming ‘The Great Escaper’ in which she co-starred with Michael Caine.”

Jackson won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for her roles in 1970’s Women in Love and A Touch of Class, in 1973.

After a successful acting career, Jackson took a hiatus from the stage and screen and entered politics being elected as the Labour Party MP for Hampstead and Highgate in the 1992 general election.

She served as a junior transport minister from 1997 to 1999 during Tony Blair’s government.

Jackson stood down at the 2015 general election and returned to acting.

She received a BAFTA for Best Actress for her role in 2019’s Elizabeth Is Missing.
