A prominent Scottish actor has issued a public apology after posting an offensive tweet following Celtic’s 4-0 win over Rangers.

Douglas Henshall, best known for playing Jimmy Pérez in BBC drama Shetland, posted on Twitter following Saturday’s Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

Shortly after full time, he told his 94,000 followers: “It’s always a good day when the H*** get humped. Lol.”

The 56-year-old was met with hundreds of replies following the post, with many criticising his choice of words.

One comment read: “Love you as an actor. Really disappointed by the language you use here. The West of Scotland needs to end this sort of bigotry and this tweet was not big and not clever.”

The actor removed the tweet on Sunday, before apologising to “anyone offended by it” on Monday.

He said: “I’ve taken down a tweet I sent over the weekend.

“It was dumb and inflammatory and completely misjudged.

“My apologies to anyone offended by it.”
