SAN JOSE — A downtown San Jose food hall proposed by an Uber co-founder is slated to include a dining center, coffee bar and dozens of kitchens, city planning documents show.

Travis Kalanick, co-founder and former chief executive officer of Uber, the ride-hailing company, is leading the CloudKitchens firm that is developing the unusual project in the former Odd Fellows Building at the corner of East Santa Clara Street and South Third Street.

The historic building was constructed around 1885 and has addresses ranging from 82 through 96 East Santa Clara Street.

CloudKitchens typically rents out its kitchen space at its locations to local restaurants, with the food picked up and delivered through apps such as Doordash and Uber Eats.

“With a growing residential population, more students in the area and workers slowly returning to the office in downtown San Jose, this will provide more choices for consumers,” said Nick Goddard, a senior vice president with Colliers, a commercial real estate firm. “It’s a great opportunity for local restaurants.”

The proposed food hall will include an estimated 26 kitchens, according to the proposal.

The project also features a dine-in restaurant that will total about 1,000 square feet and a coffee bar next to the dining establishment, the city planning documents show.

The downtown food hall would be located on the ground floor of the three-story building, according to the proposal.
