The Western Conference gained a star player when the Brooklyn Nets traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks.
On his podcast, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green said he doesn’t like the deal … because he’s not looking forward to guarding a team with Irving and Luka Doncic.
“I don’t love it,” Green said. The reason I don’t love it, that’s very hard to stop. Very hard to stop.”
Having faced his Cleveland Cavaliers in three straight NBA Finals, Green knows Irving’s on-court abilities well.
“Kyrie Irving is one of the best scorers we’ve seen,” he continued. “One of the best, if not the best ball-handler we’ve seen. Tough-shot taker, tough-shot maker.”
Green also endorsed Irving’s spot-shooting prowess, which he believes will quell any concerns of the guard coexisting in the same offense as Doncic.
Offense is probably the least of Dallas’ concerns after acquiring Irving. The 30-year-old is averaging 27.1 points per game this season, and he’ll join forces with an MVP candidate posting 33.4 points and 8.2 assists.
Defense is a larger potential issue after trading Dorian Finney-Smith, a valuable perimeter defender.
Of course, the Mavericks also must hope Irving avoids more drama off the court. It may already be too late, as the point guard at some point deleted his Instagram post apologizing for promoting anti-Semitic material.
Green and the NBA world could get their first glimpse of Irving in a Mavericks uniform when they face the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.
