Dream holiday turns into nightmare with children ‘too scared to eat’ at resort

A dream getaway has turned into a holiday from hell for some British families – as an outbreak of sickness sweeps a five-star resort in Turkey.

People have ended up on drips and children have been left scared to eat at the Rixos Sungate resort in Antalya.

More than 30 guests have been affected, with symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting, and many blame suspected food poisoning.

Some had had to be taken to hospital and ended up on drips as a result.

Affected families say some people have tested positive for salmonella. However, tour operator TUI has said food poisoning has not been confirmed at the resort and that it could be norovirus.

Dominic Brackley said his six-year-old daughter Vdara had become unwell just a few days after they arrived at the resort on May 30 and that he had spent five nights watching her sleep due to his concerns.

He told the MailOnline that she was so ill he thought she was dying.

Dominic, from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, said the family continued to suffer symptoms following their £4,700 break.

Katie Harrington spent £5,000 on a holiday for her family to celebrate her partner’s 40th birthday – but he ended up bedbound after becoming sick.

The 33-year-old mother-of-two told the MailOnline her children hadn’t eaten in days due to concerns about falling ill.

Katie now wants a refund from TUI. She said: “They’ve done nothing to sort this and are in denial. We would never have come here if we knew it hadn’t been dealt with.”

TUI said earlier this week that 34 of around 1,800 guests were affected and guests with symptoms were told to stay in their rooms.

The tour operator said the hotel would be paying the medical bills of TUI customers as a “good will gesture”.

In its latest statement, the company said: “We are aware of a small number of customers becoming unwell at the Rixos Sungate Hotel in Antalya, Turkey.

“The health and safety of our customers is always our upmost priority, and we remain in close contact with anyone impacted, offering support where necessary and are working in close collaboration with the hotel.”
