As per the report, Dream11 came on board after the Indian cricket board (BCCI) floated a tender for a new sponsorship deal on June 14. Byju’s, who are going through financial trouble, exited as the sponsor in March despite having a contract running till November 2023.
While the value of the deal with Dream11 is yet to be revealed, it is expected to be lesser than what Byju’s was paying. As per the previous deal, BCCI was bagging Rs 5.5 crore for every bilateral series. The value was lesser for ICC events due to the position of the logo on the jersey.
The report further stated that there was a lack of interest in the new sponsorship deal in the market despite a lowered base price as BCCI prohibited certain brand categories from bidding. ‘Real Money Gaming’ was also prohibited except for an exception for ‘Fantasy Sports Gaming’.
India recently had a new kit sponsor too with Adidas coming on board as they provided kit during the World Test Championship final against Australia. They replaced Killer Jeans, who were temporary kit sponsors till March 2023 after MPL Sports pulled out as kit sponsor in January. Mobile Premier League Sports opted out of their deal that was supposed to run till December 2023.
In the past, Sahara and Wills were among the long-serving sposors in the past followed by Star India before Byju’s became the sponsor.
