Drew Barrymore Teases Return as Casey Becker in Scream VII

Just when you think you’ve seen every twist in the Scream franchise, it’s been teased that one of the very first Ghostface victims could theoretically return. In March, Scream VI premiered to big profits at the box office, and chances are we will see another Ghostface (or two?) going after the survivors in a Scream VII. With that said, original Scream star Drew Barrymore has weighed in on potentially reprising her role as Casey Becker, the teenager who gets gutted and hung by the masked Ghostface killer in the opening portion of the movie.

To this day, Casey’s death remains one of the horror genre’s most memorable death scenes, and with that in mind, it would come as a tremendous shocker if a future Scream film were to reveal that the character had somehow survived. On The Drew Barrymore Show (per EW), Barrymore’s friend Ross Matthews questioned Barrymore about that possibility after the two addressed the success of Scream VI. While Matthews seemingly makes the suggestion in jest, Barrymore points out that such a return is not impossible, as “good writing” would be all that it really takes to bring her back.

As Matthews put it to Barrymore, “I asked you if maybe your character, maybe, survived. You know, doctors can do amazing things! And you said, maybe there’s a chance she did survive. So, does this make you want to bring her back for Scream VII?”

“It’s funny. I’ve never thought of it this way, but I’m pretty sure a C-section is comparable to what happened to her,” Barrymore says. “Like, literally. And I’m here! I’m fine! So, maybe Casey Becker will be okay.”

When Matthews encouraged viewers to buy their tickets now for Scream VII in order to “make it happen,” Barrymore continued, “With good writing, you can make anything happen.”

Drew Barrymore Has Already Reprised the Role

Drew Barrymore has in fact reprised her role as Casey Becker already, but it wasn’t for a Scream movie. In 2020, she put on a blonde wig and wore a similar sweater to her character for a comedy video on The Drew Barrymore Show. The video featured Ghostface stalking Casey, reminding her that it’s “that time of year” again. This time, however, Casey just totally ignores Ghostface’s attempts to reach her on the phone.

Whether Barrymore gets involved with an actual Scream movie again remains to be seen, and while it’s fun to think about a return of Casey Becker, it’s probably not something anyone should be betting the farm on, given how extensive her injuries clearly were in the original Scream.
