Drivers ‘can be charged’ for wearing fashionable sunglasses while driving

The bright summer weather is set to see millions of people travel around the UK to commute or go on holiday.

However, a motoring expert has warned that wearing some types of sunglasses could land you a fine and points on your license.

Richard Evans, the head of technical services at used car buyer WeBuyAnyCar, gave motorists advice on how to drive safely whilst wearing sunglasses.

Mr Evans explained: “As summer temperatures have arrived and there are more sunny spells on the way, many drivers will be bringing out their sunglasses.

“However, it’s important that drivers choose a pair that doesn’t cause any impairment to their vision.”

The Highway Code does not ban drivers from wearing sunglasses when behind the wheel but restricts drivers from putting on tinted glasses that could obscure vision.

Mr Evans added: “When buying a new pair, drivers should look for those which are designed to react to visible and UV light to ensure they have the right level of protection.

“With fashionable sunglasses, often the tint can be too dark for driving and the frames may affect their peripheral vision.”

However, the Highway Code also states that people must slow down or pull over if they are being dazzled by the sun whilst driving.

Richard Evans said: “If drivers are stopped by the police and deemed to have obscured vision, they can be charged with driving without due care and attention which could lead to a fine or points on your license.”

In most cases, a police officer could issue a fixed penalty notice of £100, whereas incidents that have put others’ lives at risk could lead to a fine of up to £5,000 and a driving ban.

The Highway Code also recommends always keeping a good pair of sunglasses in your vehicle, allowing you to put them on if the sun becomes too bright.

Richard Evans added: “Its important drivers remain cautious when driving and make sure they have appropriate eyewear.

“Our guide on driving in hot weather will give drivers an overview of things to look out for when getting around throughout the summer.”
