Motorists are being urged to take action to clear their driveways this winter or they could risk slipping over themselves or risk their cars not getting the traction needed when setting off. The Weather Channel suggested to drivers they could use three household items to help clear ice and frost from driveways.
They said: “The first option most reach for is of course rock salt.
“Salt lowers the freezing point of water, so it is traditionally spread on roads and driveways to keep them from getting icy.
“Whilst it is an inexpensive option, it can be very harsh on grass and shrubs and can eat away at concrete (your driveway).
“There are also concerns about the impact of salty runoff on the environment.

One of their tips included a slightly offbeat item, which may be harder to find, but can help drivers ensure the start of their journey is safe.
They continued: “Another new and interesting option some are using is a mix of sugared beet juice and rock salt.
“Beet juice lowers the freezing point of water, helping the salt to continue to melt in extreme temperatures.
“Before you go off buying regular beet juice from your local store and staining up your walkways red.
The UK is expected to be hit with snow and ice for Valentine’s Day with freezing temperatures expected, according to weather forecaster WC Charts.
Most of the UK could see snow with up to nine inches set to fall in the Scottish Highlands, 1.5 inches in northern England and around one centimetre in the Midlands.
The Met Office have also issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the UK today which could see “strong winds” which could lead to some travel disruption and loss of power.
As part of their storm guidance, the Met Office advised people to “stay indoors as much as possible”, “try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees” and to “keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences”.
