Drivers can save £20 each time they plug their EV in with home charger

In July, new law changes were introduced which required all home and workplace electric car chargers to have smart charging capability. Drivers were issued with a warning before and after July 1, to ensure that any new home EV charger they do buy meets the latest requirements.

The new regulations mean that all smart chargers need to have a data connection to be able to measure and transmit records so that drivers can view their charging history.

It is also intended to help the National Grid to adapt to the new demands of EVs and encourage drivers towards using smarter tariffs to avoid charging during peak hours.

There were concerns that some non-compliant chargers may still be sold after the June 30 cut-off date.

One of the UK’s leading smart charging companies, Ohme, is the new official charging partner for the Volkswagen Group brands Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, ŠKODA, CUPRA and SEAT.

David Watson, CEO at Ohme, said: “Our partnership with these Volkswagen Group brands underlines Ohme’s position as one of the UK’s fastest growing smart charging companies.

“The Volkswagen Group has one of the most comprehensive electrified vehicle choices available to British car buyers.

“We are looking forward to introducing those drivers to the benefits of smart charging with reduced running costs and low CO2 charging.”

Ohme also offers drivers the option to charge their car when renewable energy generation on the National Grid is at its highest, further lowering their CO2 impact.

Using the Ohme app, drivers can set the Home Pro to charge their vehicle when prices drop below a set point.

The new smart charging rules mean that EV private chargepoints sold for domestic or workplace use in Great Britain and any smart cables are covered in the regulations.

Many smart chargepoints already come pre-configured to avoid charging during peak hours, between 8am and 11am and between 4pm and 10pm on weekdays.

The regulations do not apply to private chargepoints sold in Northern Ireland, any sold before June 30, 2022, and any intended for use as public charge points.

Alistair Shields, group commercial services director for the Volkswagen Group, spoke of the partnership and the importance of drivers having a home charger.

He said: “We are delighted to announce that we will be partnering with Ohme as our preferred home wallbox supplier.

“Earlier this year, we conducted a review of leading home wallbox providers and it was clear from customer feedback that smart and intelligent charging, together with carbon optimisation, were among their top expectations for a wallbox provision, which is why we chose Ohme.

“Its award-winning Home Pro product and excellent attitude towards customer service represents a clear differentiator in the market.”
