Those behind Bradford and Manchester’s new Clean Air Zones have already confirmed a range of vehicles will not need to pay the fees. However, those who still need to pay charges can apply for a range of local exemptions in the run-up to launch.

Bradford Clean Air Zone

Private cars and motorbikes will not have to pay daily Clean Air Zone fees when the scheme launches this spring.

However, vans, minibuses and taxis all face fees of between £7 and £9 per day unless drivers have other exemptions in place.

Bradford Council said: “There will be a comprehensive programme of grants and exemptions to help local businesses get ready for the CAZ and to help upgrade some non-compliant vehicles.

They added: “Exemptions are available to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Sole Traders/self-employed, education establishments, charities and private owners of leisure vehicles registered within the Bradford Metropolitan District.

Greater Manchester

Clean Air Greater Manchester has confirmed private cars, mopeds and motorbikes will not need to pay fees under the scheme.

Instead, buses, coaches, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles will need to pay from May 30, 2022 when the zone is introduced.

Light Goods Vehicles such as vans will be given a one-year exemption and will not pay until June 1, 2023.

Clean Air GM states: “There will be some permanent and temporary local exemptions, and permanent local discounts, for the GM Clean Air Zone only.
