Drivers could face £70 fine with ministers ‘actively considering’ new parking ban

Currently, parking on the pavement is only illegal in London, but the new ban could be enforced across England and the rest of the UK. Considerations to ban pavement parking were first discussed last year, which included a consultation that ended in November.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport said: “In the light of the consultation findings, Ministers are now actively considering the options for addressing pavement parking.

“This is a priority and we will publish the formal consultation response and announce next steps for policy as soon as possible.”

The consultation received more than 15,000 responses from a mix of local authorities, disability organisations, businesses and other groups.

If passed, drivers could face a £70 fixed penalty notice for parking on a pavement, potentially to avoid blocking a narrow road or for convenience.

“You don’t know what is coming towards you, there’s a lot more quieter vehicles around now, like electric vehicles.

“You are taking your life in your hands literally.

“Winnie will take me as close as she can to the kerb and get me back onto the kerb on the other side of the vehicle.

“All that time, I’m anxious because I don’t know what’s happening. This is happening all the time.

“We just need the Government to get this done as soon as possible.”

More than 70 percent of drivers said they have had to park on a pavement in the past, with more than two in five saying they felt danger in doing so.

While changes are still under consideration in England and Wales, Scotland’s rulings are expected to be introduced in 2023.

Some organisations have predicted that local councils will have more authority when it comes to fining drivers.
