Drivers could save thousands by keeping their current vehicle for longer

The vehicle leasing company LeaseLoco has given drivers tips on how to prolong the life of their current car.

With used cars continuing to increase in price and the cost-of-living crisis still affecting motorists, some are planning on keeping their current car for longer than usual.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), in 2022 the average car in the UK was 10 years old, an increase of 1.6 years compared to 2020 figures.

However, whilst owning a car for a longer period of time can save a driver money at the dealership, it could cost significantly more at the garage if it is not looked after.

If a petrol-powered car is well maintained, it could cover 200,000 miles before needing a complete overhaul, with diesel and electrics able to travel even further.

First, LeaseLoco experts recommended that all drivers have a mechanic with a good reputation, who is able to both fix and maintain the car well and also give them advice on driving habits and fuel economy.

The company added that a good mechanic will also be able to stick to the vehicle’s maintenance schedule, which can help to prevent any unexpected problems from developing.

Whilst fluid levels and tyre pressures should be checked often, every vehicle should receive a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

In addition, LeaseLoco also highlighted the importance of cleaning the engine’s fuel system from dirt and pollutants which could increase the temperature whilst the vehicle is running.

The best way to make sure that the fuel system is clean is to use a fuel system cleaning agent that can be poured into the tank when filling up at the petrol station.

However, it is important to make sure that the cleaning agent used in the vehicle is intended for a petrol or diesel model as, whilst it is unlikely to cause damage, would not work due to the different formulas of the two fuels.

Finally, LeaseLoco experts added that drivers should never ignore small faults such as unusual sounds, smells or feelings, which may advance into costly problems.

As a motorist spends the most amount of time behind the wheel of their vehicle, the company explained that they should easily be able to notice small issues.

Once spotted, the driver should consult the manufacturer or mechanic about the fault in order to identify the root cause and quickly repair it.
