Drivers face fines of up to £2,500 for neglecting vehicle repairs

A motoring expert has warned against the risks of neglecting vehicle repairs during the cost-of-living crisis.

In a survey conducted by the online car repair marketplace ClickMechanic, 48 percent of drivers admitted that the increase in the cost of living had put them off getting their vehicle fixed.

Andrew Jervis, the CEO of the ClickMechanic, explained the importance of making sure your car is in good shape.

“Our bills are rising, and our finances are taking a hit, so it’s understandable that vehicle repairs are lower on the list of priorities than food and heating, for example.

“However, it’s always important to keep your vehicle roadworthy, and failing to carry out essential repairs such as replacing worn-out brake pads can not only put your life at risk but others on the road too.”

ClickMechanic also noted that 45 percent of those who took part in the survey neglected servicing their car due to cost, increasing the risk of breaking down or requiring expensive repairs.

Currently, any vehicle on the roads between three and 40 years old must take an MOT test every year, which highlights any faults or defects to determine whether the vehicle is unroadworthy.

However, the company noted that a vehicle can still be considered unroadworthy whilst having a current MOT certificate, if a serious defect is apparent.

In addition, using a vehicle that is not maintained or broken may also lead to you receiving a fine, if the police consider it to be unroadworthy.

Andrew explained how trying to save money on vehicle repairs may lead to drivers spending significantly more in the long run.

“It can prove a false economy if your vehicle falls into such disrepair that it can be deemed unroadworthy, in which case you can be hit with a £2,500 fine and three penalty points on your licence.”

The Highway Code also requires motorists to never ignore warning displays on the vehicle’s instrument panel, which could show that a serious fault is developing.

ClickMechanic told motorists that they can save money on vehicle repairs by regularly checking the state of their vehicle, particularly before setting off on long journeys.

In particular, the company recommended checking that windows and mirrors are clean, all of the lights are working, fluids such as oil, coolant and washer fluid are topped up and that the tyres have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm.
