People are being asked to only travel by train if necessary on Saturday as services will be significantly disrupted by rail strikes. Network Rail said just one in 10 services would run, with many expected to travel by car over the weekend and in the week as strikes continue.
More than 54,000 members of the RMT, Aslef, Unite and TSSA unions will join the picket, bringing the rail network to a standstill.
Much of the road network is set to be affected due to an increase in drivers, who may usually have taken the train.
The strikes will take place this coming week on October 1, 5 and 8, with the possibility of further strikes later in the month.
Drivers are being urged to use apps like Google Maps or Waze, or listen to local radio stations so they’re aware of any congestion or accidents.

“With recent strikes on August 20, we once again expected a surge in demand, with disruption continuing into non-strike days and alternative transport providers, such as taxis, who help to keep the country moving.
“As well as considering rail workers, the Government and local authorities need to double-down and overhaul their approach to other parts of the transport system.
“[It needs to] ensure a provision of financial support and safeguarding for small businesses, employees and the self-employed involved in providing transport for the public.”
One in five taxi drivers were unable to renew their licenses and continue their careers or had their vehicle repossessed, affecting their credit rating and ability to return to the industry.
Mr Micklethwaite concluded, saying: “We’re calling on them to review the licensing renewal processes for taxi drivers to help keep more of them on the roads and provide an extra incentive for drivers who’ve exited the industry to return.
“They provided a crucial part of the transport eco-system already and this strike action has shown how much they are truly needed.”
