Motorists will naturally feel anxious when they see a warning light appear on their dashboard and will point to an issue with the vehicle. A recent survey found that 60 percent of UK motorists admit they don’t understand what their dashboard warning light means.
A further 30 percent say they have no idea what to do when a light does appear.
Around one in 10 motorists end up having trouble later down the line as a result of ignoring the dashboard warning light.
When ignoring the lights, it can lead to the vehicle breaking down, causing an accident, expensive repair costs and even being stopped by the police.
Warning lights on the vehicle dashboard follow the traffic light system in terms of the severity of the issue.

The RAC warns drivers that once they see a red light on their dashboard, they should stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so.
Motorists can be fined up to £2,500 for driving in a dangerous condition.
A spokesperson for LeaseElectricCar.co.uk commented on the need for drivers to be aware of the lights and ensure they are always being safe when on the roads.
They said: “It can cause a great deal of worry when a warning light comes on while you or driving but while it can interrupt your journey, they are necessary and are helping the motorist by giving advance warning of a problem.
“It can help to diagnose the problem more easily in the event of poor performance of a vehicle or even when a breakdown so that you can get the relevant assistance to get back on the road.
“It is therefore useful to know what some of the most common searched for warning lights mean.”
The battery warning light is the most searched for and one of the most urgent lights that drivers need to address.
An illuminated battery light could be due to a number of issues, including a loose or corroded battery cable, problem with the alternator or voltage regulator, or even damaged cells or plates inside the battery.
It is also vital that drivers ensure they stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so once the brake warning light appears.
This will appear if the brake fluid in the master cylinder is low or if the parking brake is engaged.
If the system springs a leak, the fluid level will drop and a leak can cause the brakes to fail, potentially leading to a very dangerous situation.
Another serious red symbol is the airbag warning light which could mean there is an issue with a crash sensor, SRS module, or other airbag component.
