With rain forecast in various parts of the country, an expert is warning motorists to make sure their garage is protected.
Lidget Compton, the largest manufacturer of concrete garages in the UK, gave drivers tips on how to prepare their garage for the rain and prevent flooding which could cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to their car.
Richard Berry, outdoor building specialist for Lidget Compton, advised drivers on the best things to do before heavy rain is due.
He explained: “Installing a rubber seal will help to protect your garage from rain runoff and minimal flooding.
“It can also help prevent drafts and keep your garage at a more comfortable temperature.”
Lidget Compton also recommended that motorists make sure that the garage’s gutters aren’t clogged, which could lead to a build up of rain water on the roof.
The company advised that the best way to clear blocked gutters is to use a secure stepladder and remove any debris with a tool such as a garden trowel.
Whilst up the stepladder, it is also recommended to check the roof for any signs of damage or dips where water could accumulate.
If a garage roof needs replacing, Lidget Compton recommended fitting a new one that is made from steel or fibre cement for better durability.
Another area of the garage motorists should check is the foundation, which Richard explained can encourage flooding if badly maintained.
He said: “Even the smallest of cracks and holes in the foundation of your garage can cause a great deal of damage. If you spot some cracks, it’s not an immediate cause for concern, however you should aim to get it fixed before any bad weather comes.”
Finally, Lidget Compton also suggested that if a flood is forecasted to be severe, drivers should place sandbags around any openings.
Whilst they are a short-term solution to flooding, sandbags are good at absorbing water and are quick to put into place if flooding is unexpected.
With prices low, the company recommends that all garage owners keep some sand bags in the building for emergency use.
